Spousal Equality According to Georgian Law: A Comprehensive Analysis
Abstract
This article examines spousal equality in Georgia through legal, historical, and sociocultural lenses. Despite significant legislative reforms aligning with international standards, practical implementation of equality between spouses remains challenging. Traditional patriarchal structures continue to influence family dynamics in Georgian society, creating a notable gap between formal legal equality and everyday reality. The article analyzes the current legal framework, identifies key challenges in areas such as property rights, parental responsibilities, and marital forms, and offers recommendations for addressing these issues within Georgia's unique cultural context. Moving toward genuine spousal equality requires not only legal reforms but also social, economic, and educational initiatives that can harmonize traditional values with contemporary human rights principles.
