A Social Work Perspective on the Assessment and Support of Individuals with Personality Disorders
Abstract
Personality disorders are long-term patterns of behavior, emotion, and cognition that deviate dramatically from what is typical in a person's society. These patterns are rigid, induce distress, and impair an individual's capacity to operate in everyday life. People with personality disorders frequently struggle to maintain stable relationships, manage their emotions, and conform to social standards. As a result, individuals may struggle at school, at work, and with their families. This is where social work comes into play: offering support, understanding, and rehabilitation to individuals with personality disorders so that they can have more stable and happy lives.
