Abstract

ABSTRACT

A phrase is a group of words that forms a grammatical component. It can be used to communicate something. It is a part of a sentence and cannot stand on its own. Phrases provide more information about whatever the sentence is speaking about. "Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed." (Wilkins 1972:111) "When students travel, they don't carry grammar books, they carry dictionaries." (Krashen in Lewis 1993:) Hornby (1989: 959) defines vocabulary as; Total number of words, which make up a language; (Range of) words known to or used by a person, in a trade, profession, etc.; Thefreedictionary.com defines vocabulary as: All the words of a language; The sum of words used by, understood by, or at the command of a particular person or group. According to linguists, vocabulary can be divided into 2 types: active and passive

  • Active vocabulary: is vocabulary that we need to understand and use.
  • Passive vocabulary: is vocabulary we need to understand (e.g. when reading a text), but we will not need to use.
