In the context of modern education, the development of functional literacy has become one of the key priorities of primary school teaching. Literary reading, as a core subject in primary education, plays a crucial role in shaping students’ reading competence, critical thinking, communicative skills, and ability to interpret texts meaningfully. This article explores the pedagogical potential of literary reading in developing functional literacy among primary school students. The study analyzes theoretical foundations, teaching strategies, and classroom practices that enhance students’ comprehension, reflection, and application of textual information. Practical methods and task examples based on classroom experience are presented to demonstrate how literary texts can be transformed into tools for developing life-oriented skills. The findings highlight that systematic and purposeful work with literary texts significantly contributes to students’ functional literacy, motivation for reading, and overall academic success.
