Abstract

Telemedicine, defined as the remote delivery of healthcare services through telecommunications, has emerged as a vital tool to bridge healthcare disparities, especially in rural areas. The study examines telemedicine’s historical development, types, and applications across pediatric care, diabetes management, psychotherapy, and critical emergency scenarios. Special emphasis is placed on India’s eSanjeevani platform, which enables real-time and store-and-forward consultations, enhancing access to specialist care. Findings highlight that telemedicine improves diagnostic efficiency, reduces patient transfers, and supports timely clinical decisions. Despite limitations such as connectivity challenges and lack of physical examination, telemedicine proves to be a cost-effective and scalable solution to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and outcomes in underserved regions
