EQUIVALENCE IN TRANSLATION

Abstract

The resemblance between a word or expression in one language and its translation in another is known as translational equivalence. These ranges of reference overlap, resulting in this similarity. An equivalent in Azerbaijan language that may be translated is a word or phrase. There are four different kinds of equivalence: linguistic (word-for-word correspondence); paradigmatic (grammatical categories); textual (limited to text pattern); and stylistic (functional equivalence of elements in both the original and translation aiming at an expressive goal). In order to translate a concept into a target language that conveys the same meaning and intent as the original, the translator must first comprehend the concept in the source language. This process is known as functional equivalence finding. Non-equivalence at the word level is defined as when a word from the source text has no direct counterpart in the target language. Furthermore, the one-to-one relationship between a word's meaning and its form does not necessarily determine non-equivalence at the word level. Semantic equivalence emphasizes that the translation and the source text should provide equal effects in the expression. Semantic equivalence is the deep equivalence in translation based on surface equivalence of translation, such as equivalences of format, rhythm, part of speech, syntax, etc. Grammar, lexis, and word order in Azerbaijani and English are quite unlike. There are problems and difficulties in the process of translation from English to Azerbaijani or vice versa.
