SOCIAL WELL-BEING OF OLDER PEOPLE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATIONAL SPORTS IN URBAN SETTINGS
Keywords:

This article examines the current state of recreational sport programmes available in urban areas of Kazakhstan that are designed to improve the well-being of older citizens. The study addresses a pressing issue: despite the proven benefits of recreational sport for healthy ageing, many older adults in Kazakhstan remain insufficiently engaged in such activities. A key barrier identified is the low level of public awareness, as a significant proportion of the population is not informed about existing governmental initiatives promoting physical activity among older adults. The article reviews demographic statistics related to the ageing population and analyses relevant state programmes aimed at improving their quality of life.
The findings suggest that increasing the visibility and accessibility of recreational sport initiatives is essential for expanding participation among older adults. Broader dissemination of information and wider geographical coverage of such programmes across Kazakhstan are necessary steps to integrate recreational sport into the daily lives of the elderly. Limited engagement in physical activity has implications for demographic policy, contributing to higher levels of morbidity and psycho-emotional stress among older citizens. Strengthening public outreach and programme implementation therefore represents an important pathway to enhancing active ageing and overall social well-being.
