Abstract

This article examines the social and political conditions of the German diaspora in Kazakhstan during the 1930s and 1940s, a period marked by profound transformations under Soviet rule. The study highlights the effects of collectivization, forced sedentarization, and repression on the German population, emphasizing the disruption of traditional agricultural systems and the emergence of social resistance. Archival sources, including NKVD reports and official documents, reveal the mechanisms through which Soviet authorities monitored, controlled, and suppressed the German communities, framing them as potential "anti-Soviet elements." The research also explores the demographic concentration of German settlements, their socio-economic organization, and the role of religious groups, which were often perceived by the state as ideological threats.

The article further analyzes the political and ideological pressures faced by the German diaspora, including accusations of maintaining foreign contacts, spreading anti-Soviet sentiments, and engaging with religious and charitable organizations abroad. The study demonstrates how these factors contributed to the systematic targeting of community leaders, religious figures, and economically influential groups, leading to arrests and widespread repression. By synthesizing archival data with historical research, the article provides a comprehensive understanding of the German diaspora’s adaptation strategies, social dynamics, and the impact of Soviet policies on their communal life, shedding light on broader patterns of ethnic minority management in the USSR
