Abstract

Food insecurity has always been a great burden for the Haute Matsiatra Region. This phenomenon is very striking in rural areas. The lean period is evident in this observation and is reflected in terms of food unavailability. The available food stock cannot cover the growing needs of the population. Which weakens the regional economy. Therefore, this article examines the influence of traditional practice on the duration of the lean season. Data was collected from seventy (70) households spread across the five (05) districts of the said Region. The use of an econometric model proves crucial to verify the relationship between the “tradition” variables and the “lean period”. The results reveal that the preeminence of tradition on the farm accentuates the lean period. Recommendations will be put forward to promote sustainable food security
