Chi weaving is an important component of decorative and applied arts that reflects the cultural beliefs of nomadic societies. Traditional crafts play a key role in cultural heritage, transmitting aesthetic principles, technical skills, and symbolic meanings from generation to generation. Although scholars are increasingly interested in Central Asian decorative arts, chi weaving remains one of the least studied areas within this field. This study addresses this gap by examining the decorative patterns and cultural heritage represented in chi weaving. Accordingly, the aim of the study was to analyze the symbolism of ornamental motifs and color combinations in traditional Kazakh shi weaving. The research methods included art historical analysis, semiotic interpretation, comparative analysis, and ethnographic research, through which the visual and compositional aspects of the ornaments were examined. Semiotic analysis was used to interpret the symbolic meanings of patterns and colors, while comparative analysis identified similarities between shi weaving and other Kazakh decorative traditions. Ethnographic materials provided insights into contemporary craft practices. The results present an analysis of several key ornamental motifs such as Koshkarmuiz, Synyq Muiz, Kus Kanaty, and Zhuldyz, which are most commonly used in chi weaving. These motifs represent various thematic aspects, including zoomorphic, natural, and cosmological elements, and are combined with traditional color symbolism adapted to the linear design of reed weaving. Moreover, unlike many other forms of decorative art, ornamentation in shi weaving is closely connected to the weaving technique itself, functioning as a cultural code that reflects pastoral life, the connection with nature, and perceptions of the universe. The study highlights the role of shi weaving as a preserver of cultural memory and traditional knowledge.
