CONSIDERATION OF POLYPHARMACY IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
Abstract
The goal of the study was to determine how frequent cases of polypharmacy are in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. What kind of interactions and side effects occur when a large number of drugs are irrationally prescribed. We found out the perspective of the clinical pharmacist's involvement with the doctor in perfecting the pharmacotherapeutic process.
The research had the nature of a survey. Conducted using social networks and e-mail. A total of 37 doctors participated in the research, including 20 endocrinologists and 17 family doctors. A computer program - Google Forms - was used to process the data.
As a result of the research, it became clear that the doctors consider the fact that due to the registration of many medicinal products in the Georgian pharmaceutical market today and the irrational prescribing of these drugs by doctors, the risk of developing polypharmacy often arises, and they consider conducting trainings on medicines as one of the ways to solve the problem. The vast majority of doctors, both endocrinologists and family doctors, do not have information about cooperation with a clinical pharmacist and therefore do not understand the importance of the clinical pharmacist's role in the fight against polypharmacy. As a recommendation, we believe that the involvement of the clinical pharmacist together with the doctor in diabetes type-2 in the process of treatment, it will make pharmacotherapy more effective, because, in the process of providing care, the pharmacist informs the patient about the use of the drug, the administration schedule, possible interactions, monitors the patient's condition, thereby saving the doctor's time and minimizing the risks of polypharmacy.
