Mother’child relations due to immigration and effect on language learning

This research paper examines the relationship between mothers and their children in the context of immigration from Kazakhstan to the United States and the impact of this process on learning two languages: English and Kazakh. The main attention is paid to Kazakh mothers who face the challenges of preserving their native language in conditions of predominance of English. The study is based on data collected from a focus group of 10 immigrant women. The results show how social integration, the educational level of mothers and the length of stay in the United States affect the use and preservation of the Kazakh language in the family, as well as the teaching of English to children. The analysis highlights the importance of support from educational institutions and public organizations in preserving the cultural and linguistic diversity of immigrant families
